THE national soccer team's exploits in the 2010 Africa/World Cup qualifiers have excited president Yoweri Museveni, who confidently predicted that Cranes will make it to the finals.

"The Cranes are making good progress in their campaign. They are playing very well and will make it to the finals," he said amidst cheers from sports fans at the opening of the 5th Africa University Games at Mandela stadium Namboole.

The president could not hide his admiration for the team that beat 2006 World Cup finalists Angola 3-1 at the same venue less than four weeks ago, before going on to hold them away in Luanda. He promised more government support towards the 2010 campaign.

Uganda last qualified for the Nations Cup finals in 1978. Angola will host the Nations Cup finals while South Africa will host Africa's first World Cup.
