KING Mswati has urged the Buganda Parliament (Lukiiko) to take their responsibilities seriously, as they play a major role in building and maintaining peace and improving their people's welfare.

The King of Swaziland told the Lukiiko yesterday that it plays an effective role in the central government's efforts to reach and serve its people.

He thanked President Yoweri Museveni for inviting him to visit the Kabaka and to address the Lukiiko during his visit.

"This parliament places its members in a better position to play a specific and targeted role of seeking out the input of the people and addressing the critical issues that face this kingdom. You are closer to the people in your communities and you are able to communicate with them. In this regard, you are able to initiate policies and plans based on clear understanding of their situation," Mswati said.

Kingdoms play an important role in poverty alleviation, job creation, access to health care and social services, he added

The King of Buganda, Ronald Mutebi, praised the Swazi monarch for the peace and stability it has established in its kingdom for 200 years. "This is an enviable record, that you have given the Swazi people a chance to elect their leaders every five years."

He said Mswati's visit was an encouragement to Buganda at a time when the kingdom is grappling with environmental degradation, HIV/AIDS, poverty, ignorance and lack of transparency.
