Nigeria: FCT NLC Warns Private Schools to Join Teachers' Strike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned private and unity schools to join the ongoing nationwide teachers strike embarked upon for the payment of the new Teachers Salary Structure (TSS).

In a state issued by the vice -chairman of the council, Comrade Abdullahi D. Yahaya and the Assistant Secretary, Comrade C. N. Maman, the NLC observed with dismay the non-challant attitude of teachers in the private and unity schools to the on-going strike and advised them in their own interest to join the strike without further delay or risk forced closure of their schools through picketing.

The union also called on President Umaru Musa Yar'adua to quickly address the teacher's problem before the council is forced to take solidarity action in furtherance of the teachers' demand."

The one-page statement by the executive council of the FCT union reads in part: "The SEC meeting commends the overwhelming support given by Nigeria Teachers in public schools to their union in the on-going national strike and urges them not to relent until victory is assured.

"SEC commends also the timely intervention of the National Assembly committees on education for briefing the president on the true position of the teachers' demand and requests them to further exploit other avenues towards actualizing the TSS.

"The SEC-in-session expressed disappointment on the way the Federal Government has handled the demand of the teachers since 1991 and urged them to step up action to direct the salaries and wages commission the issue the enabling circular for the implementation of TSS in the interest of the Nigerian children vis-à-vis Nigeria's future.
