The forthcoming First Northern Agricultural Summit may serve as a harbinger of industrial revolution in the Northern part of the country and by extension Nigeria as a whole.
Speaking to Daily Trust in an exclusive interview yesterday in Abuja, Chairman of the organizing committee and Zonal Director of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Kaduna Network Center, Mallam Abdulkarim Muha-mmad Abdullahi said the summit with the theme Agriculture: Policy and Finance imperative for vision 2020, will be the first in the history of the North and Nigeria.
Mallam Abdullahi said it is the first in the history of the country because of its nature and character as key players in the nation's economy would be participating with the sole aim of developing mechanized farming system in the country.
He said previous agriculture summits were based on programme while the upcoming one would be anchored on projects.
According to him: "Proj-ects succeed. They don't fail. They have structures, time frame and allocated roles."
Presidents of Ghana, Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon and Gambia would also be participating in the summit co-sponsored by the NTA and Admiral Environment Care. The Daily Trust Newspaper has been chosen as the official newspaper for the summit.
Former Secretary General of the United Nations Mr. Kofi Annan would also be in attendance in the summit which holds between July 28 and 30 in Kaduna.
Daily Trust can report that Mr. Annan recently launched the Green Africa Food Security Initiative.
Other personalities that would be attending the summit are: The Ministers of Agriculture and Water Resources, commissioners for Agriculture and Water Resources, chairmen committees on Agriculture of the state House of Assemblies and the 24 commercial banks in the country.
Other sectors that would be participate in the summit, he said are the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
He said the banks would have the opportunity to meet the farmers and other stakeholders in a roundtable conference to discuss issues relating to agricultural loans and the development of small and medium scale industries in the country.
Other participants expected at the summit are the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Explaining NTA's involvement, Mallam Abdullahi said it is part of its promotion of the Federal Government's 7-point agenda of which food security is central to it.
He also said that the date for the phase two of its agricultural project which is the First Southern Agricultural Summit would be announced during the summit in Kaduna.
According to him: The reason for starting from the North was for easy management; as well as the agro-ecological differences in the nature of the farming seasons, soil and crop conditions between the South and the North.

"If we were to involve all the 36 states, it would make it difficult for us to manage," he added.
