No fewer than 20 houses including the Benin residence of Senator Daisy Danjuma, have been sacked by flood after long hours of heavy downpour last Monday night.

The development which came on the heel of the renewed efforts by the Governor Osunbor led administration to combat flood menace in the state.

It would be recalled that erosion menace had been a usual phenomenon in some of the major towns and villages in Edo state since the past seven years. Mostly affected are Queen Ede area of Ikpoba Hill in Benin City, Auchi township and some parts of the Edo north.

On assumption of office in May 29, 2007, Governor Osunbor had commenced work on some of the troubled areas which included the disilting of some of the major roads and streets in Benin City thereby reducing the level of erosion.

Investigations conducted by Daily Champion revealed that while residents of other areas are already smiling due to the efforts of government, people living near the Freedom way junction along Ihama which included Senator Danjuma, are worried over the level of flooding in the area.

As source at the State Ministry of Environment told Daily Champion that some structures must be demolished to the create way for the water to flow freely in the area.

At about 7.45am Tuesday when Daily champion visited the street located in the heart of the GRA, about four houses which included Senator Danjuma's and residents were seen salvaging their personal belonging from the submerged houses.

Some of the domestic staff of Senator Danjuma were seen baling water out of the palatial compound amidst lamentation.

One of the residents whose belongings were completely washed away by the flood complained bitterly and blamed the former senator for not having love for the people around her in mind.

"We are not happy because as you can see, all what we have laboured to get had been washed away by flood. This situation had been like this since the past years even when this woman called senator was still at the National Assembly.

"Those days, people will say you are lucky when you build house near a rich man, but this one is another way round. We expect that she should have attracted the attention of the necessary agencies in the federal level so that this problem could be solved. We have not benefited anything from her till she left office.

"It is certain that if she is around now, this flood will not have allowed her to enter the house just as some of us have been rendered homeless. This is s great challenge to her, she should come and collaborate with government so that our lives could be saved from this flood" Mr. Sunday Emoyon, one of the residents in the area lamented.

Other areas affected included some portions of Erediauwa road and Boundary road also in GRA where residents used refuse to block the drainage system.

Official of the state Ministry of Environment said arrangement has been concluded to effect major flood control in the area as soon as the raining season ceased.
