PRESIDENT Mwanawasa has been successfully operated on to improve his breathing as doctors in France continue treating him for hypertension, Vice-President Rupiah Banda has said.

Mr Banda said in Lusaka yesterday in a statement posted on the State House website that Dr Mwanawasa was recovering satisfactorily.

"Following the minor operation yesterday afternoon (Monday 7 July, 2008) to improve his breathing, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Levy P Mwanawasa, SC, is recovering satisfactorily.

"His breathing is much better and Dr Mwanawasa had a restful night at the Percy Military Hospital, Paris, France," Mr Banda said.

The vice-president said President Mwanawasa continued to be in a stable condition.

He said the treatment had been adjusted taking into account the minor operation.

The President on Monday underwent medical review and doctors decided that he should have a minor operation to improve his breathing.

President Mwanawasa was evacuated to Percy Military Hospital after he suffered a stroke in Egypt where he had gone to attend the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government summit.

He underwent successful surgery in Egypt before being moved to France for further treatment.

Before being evacuated to Paris, Dr Mwanawasa was admitted to Sharm-EL- Sheikh International Hospital.

The Zambia Disability HIV/AIDS Human Rights Programme (ZDHAHRP) has added its voice to those wishing President Mwanawasa a speedy recovery.

ZDHAHRP also commended the Government for the consistency in updating the nation on the condition of the President.

ZDHAHRP programmes director Elijah Ngwale, said his organisation alongside the Church, was praying to God to heal Dr Mwanawasa.

Senior Chief Nsokolo of the Mambwe people of Northern Province also wished Dr Mwanawasa a quick recovery.

Senior Chief Nsokolo said in a statement released by his public relations assistant, Jeff Kapembwa in Lusaka yesterday that the chiefdom learnt of Dr Mwanawasa's illness with a sense of remorse.
