THE Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger-Delta, yesterday, deployed soldiers to Jakpa in Uvwie local government area of Delta State following the burning of houses, wanton looting and rape by restive youths.

Vanguard learnt that in the past few days, particularly after the new local government chairman announced the implementation of the order, there has been fighting between some youths loyal to the government and those opposed to the decision.Spokesman for the JTF, David Ejoor Barracks, Major O. Ochagwuba confirmed to Vangauard when contacted yesterday that soldiers have been deployed in the area to maintain peace.

It was gathered that the battle is between two youth groups, one saying that they were used by politicians to get into office, only for them to turn around to disband their group after getting to power, while the other group are working for the government.

Reports from the area said that so many persons have been injured and that there was a general sense of insecurity as the youths were shooting sporadically into the air. On Monday, the JTF mounted checkpoints at the Jakpa junction and carried out some surveillance operations but that did not deter the armed youths to continue with their rampage, yesterday.

Residents, motorists and shop owners fled for their dear lives as guns boomed in the area, yesterday evening. Some persons were also trapped as a result of the fighting.

The state government had vowed to stop the restive youths who are bent on causing insecurity in the area and the governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan said he would not condone criminality by any youth group.

Reports said that the soldiers took over the Jakpa junction at the Effurun-Warri Road, searching motorists and passers-by, while the streets were deserted by traders.
