Zimbabwe: Country to Field Team for Chess Championships

9 July 2008

Harare — ZIMBABWE will for the first time field a team at the World Schools Chess Championships in Bishan, Singapore, from July 21-31.

Zimbabwe Schools Chess Federation committee member Ashok Chakravati yesterday said 14 players are set to take on the worlds' best emerging talent at the event. "Last year, we held tournaments for schools and came up with 100 players. In December, we held another competition where the top two players in each category were picked. "Some of the players are very fortunate in that their parents and schools have agreed to meet the expenses but we also have six from high density schools, one of them an orphan. "As a committee, we have sourced for sponsorship from the corporate sector and on Saturday, July 12, we will be holding a function in Harare where the sponsors and the players will meet," said Chakravati.

According to the rules of the championships each national federation or school association can enter an unlimited number of players in each of age groups. The students will compete in the Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 with the top three in each category getting medals. The tournament will be played in accordance with the Swiss System in nine rounds. The rate of play will be according to FIDE regulations 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from the first move. Chakravati is confident that their team, leaving on July 19, will do well and produce the next generation of players to follow in the footsteps of African champions Robert Gwaze and Rodwell Makoto.
