Ethiopia: Japan Inaugurates $ 10 Million Water Supply Project in SNNPR

A 10-million USD Japanese water supply project in Gurage, SNNPR region, was inaugurated on Sunday with the presence of the Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia Kinichi Komano and Asfaw Dingamo, Minister of Water Resources.

At the inaugural, Ambassador Kinichi said that under this water supply project, the government of Japan had constructed 205 Shallow wells and rehabilitated 24 springs in 15 woredas in the SNNPRS and has provided equipment and machinery for groundwater development.

He said the aim of fostering the water sector strategy of the Ethiopian government was to provide access for all people to potable water.

Ambassador Kinichi added that Japan has also started the rural water supply project in the Tigray regional state.

Japan also provides equipment and machinery for groundwater development, and has been implementing the water supply project in the Afar and Amhara regional states.

Japan has been implementing the water sector capacity enhancement project in SNNPRS, which is aimed at training Woreda level water and sanitation engineers, establishing the distribution structure of spare parts for water facilitate and familiarizing used with the 'rope pump' which is inexpensive and can be produced domestically and is easy to repair.
