The future and the role of the 50 cent coin-the lowest denomination still accepted as a mode of payment - hangs in the balance with reports of an increasing number shoppers are rejecting it during transactions.
Outlets are not accepting the coin for purchases despite an assurance in May by the Central Bank that the coin was still legal tender.
The assurance had been prompted by increased complaints of rejection of the currency.
According to insiders at Central Bank, the number of cases concerning rejection of the 50 cent have risen dramatically since the clarification was issued.
