Johannesburg — ESS, the support services division of food services company Compass Group SA, has been awarded a full turnkey solution contract for Vodacom.

GM of facilities management Charles Gover said yesterday the company had been providing catering, cleaning, horticulture and water features maintenance for Vodacom in the north of the country since 2006.

The new contract, however, extended the scope of the services and over time the con-tract would be rolled out nationwide.

Gover said the company would now be completely responsible for managing Vodacom's infrastructure.

The new contract also includes services such as space planning, regulation, compliance, and power and air conditioning facilities.

ESS was rolling out the contract and would service all Vodacom's operations in Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria, Polokwane and Nelspruit immediately.

Gover said that as part of the contract, the group would be training staff and would bring experienced artisans on board to teach skills to younger staff members.

The contract was also expected to create jobs, Gover said.

The company expected to increase its staff complement by about 50% at the Midrand Campus. In addition, about 400 jobs would be outsourced.

Compass is majority owned by UK-listed Compass, which last year reported revenue at constant currency levels of £10,3bn, up 5% from £9,8bn.

Its operating profit improved 23,6% to £529m from £428m.

The local company earned 80% of its revenue from food services.
