Addis Abeba — Netherlands donated on Monday an additional fine million euro to aid Ethiopian drought victims, according to a statement from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa.
Earlier, in May 2008, the Netherlands had provided 3.5 million euro contribution for the cause, the embassy said.
Of the five million euro donation, two million would go to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to assist 75,000 Ethiopian children affected by severe malnutrition, and the remaining three million to the United Nations Humanitarian Response Fund, the statement said.
Bert Koenders, Netherlands' Minister for Development Cooperation, emphasized that "urgent action is required" to help those 4.5 million Ethiopians affected by drought who are also relying on emergency food assistance, according to the statement.
The UN estimates 200 million euro required to curb the drought situation.
