As part of efforts to further reduce poverty among Nigerians, the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) will soon take delivery of 5, 000 bicycles popularly called Keke Napep for distribution to the poor.

National Coordinator of NAPEP, Dr Magnus Kpakol disclosed this yesterday while addressing newsmen at a one-day sensitisation workshop in Kaduna for stakeholders in poverty eradication in the North West Zone.

Kpakol, who is also the Senior Special Adviser to President Umaru Yar'adua on Poverty Reduction, said NAPEP had taken delivery of 500 out of the 5, 000 units of bicycles, which it ordered last year, adding that as soon as the remaining units were delivered in the next few weeks they would be distributed across the 36 states and FCT in order to further enhance its poverty reduction and empowerment programmes among the people.

"NAPEP is determined to reduce poverty among Nigerians especially extreme poverty through our programmes such as Village Economic Development Solution, COPE (in care of the people) Nigeria's conditional cash transfer scheme, giving out soft loans as well as distribution of Keke Napep.

"We placed orders for 5, 000 units of bicycles last year and they will be delivered in the next few weeks. 500 units of the bicycle have already been delivered and will go round all the 36 states of the country and FCT. There is need for mass participation in economic development process among Nigerians, if we want to achieve our vision 2020 goal as well as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

He added that there were three major challenges facing the extremely poor which NAPEP was trying to eliminate namely; "Lack of access to capital, tools to fight poverty, lack of access to stable market to sell the goods and services produced and lack of access to information.
