Nigeria: Kwali, Abaji to Get Potable Water

The Director FCT Water Board, Eng. Jibril Ibrahim, yesterday said that adequate and quality water supplies would soon be made available to the residents of Kwali and Abaji Area councils.

Engr Ibrahim disclosed this at Kwali during the presentation of the FCT draft water policy to residents of the two area councils at a stakeholder's forum organized by the board to enable the resident make inputs to the draft policy.

The residents had complained at the forum of lack of adequate water supply in their areas.

They said water in their areas is fetched from wells and rivers.

Engr Jibril assured the residents that government will provide the necessary infrastructure for the provision of water in their communities and that each community will take over the effective management of these facilities and the scheme in order for sustainability of the program to ensure effective distribution.

He said the program will not be tied to a particular government, adding that it is going to be collaboration between the three tiers of governments in the city with the area councils taking over the distribution and management of the project since they are closer to the people.

He assured the residents that as soon as the bill is put into law, water problem in the city would be greatly solved.

The acting chairman of Kwali Area council, represented by the council's Chief of Staff, Seidu Saleh, said the council will partners with the board to make sure that the water scheme is implemented and achieved.

He said the provision of adequate water to communities is the social responsibility of any government and that the council is ready to take up the responsibility for the betterment of its people.

He appealed to the residents to take government facilities as their own, stressing that it is the only way they can be managed properly.

Earlier in her speech, Halima Muhammed, The project coordinator from DFID, said with the latest water policy and community participation, the aim of providing good water for the residents would be achieved.

She disclosed that Department for Infrastructure Development (DFID) has committed a reason sum of money toward the actualization of the program.
