Nigeria: Fashola Commends Union Bank Fire Fighters, Receives Books

11 July 2008

GOVERNOR Fashola has commended Union Bank of Nigeria PLC's fire fighting equipment for fulfilling its objective of rescuing people and putting off fire from high rise within Lagos metropolis.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State who led several Lagosians to commend and appreciate the Bank for its generous corporate social responsibility trends over the year spoke during the courtesy call of the Group Managing/Chief Executive of the Bank, Dr. Barth Ebong, said the Bank's antecedents are unparallel when it comes to service to humanity.

It would be recalled that Union Bank's fire fighting equipment was deployed recently when the Headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority on Marina caught fire. The same equipment was handy at the Unity House, United Bank for Africa fire incidents, amongst other rescue feats.

Governor Fashola was further excited and thrilled with the Bank's donation of 2,000 copies of Mathematics Dictionary books for libraries of post primary institutions in Lagos State of which Dr. Ebong said was informed by the Bank's desire to uplift the learning of the subject.

Dr. Ebong expressed satisfaction at the pace of development in the state and pledged the Bank's interest in the socio-economic development of the state through collaborating with the government in the various initiatives it has mapped out for itself. "From what we have seen already in the first one year of this administration, there is no doubt that in the first four years, this administration will deliver a Lagos Mega City of our dream," Dr. Ebong stressed.

He identified sectors to include Fourth Mainland Bridge, Housing, Agriculture, Infrastructural development, Mortgage, Transportation, Social Security Card and other areas of mutual benefits.

Governor Fashola, expressed joy and optimism that the management of the Bank has strongly expressed its willingness to partner with his administration. He stated that the state government has provided vast investment opportunities for the organized private sector to latch into even as he affirmed that the Bank's partnership in the mortgage scheme would make the scheme "stronger, bigger and better."

While stressing the need for the workability of the projects on availability of fund which comes from corporate tax, the governor declared, "we will engage those who make our job easier by paying their tax" as it is part of the social contract which the electorate is constitutionally expected to fulfill for the good governance of the society.

The multi_million naira equipment is capable of lifting water to 42 metres and during operations, its fire fighting capability will provide cooling, holds back flames and smoke to allow people to escape more rapidly. With the aid of a wet riser system, the fire fighters can move from the cage into the building.
