Over 300 bags of rice seedlings were Tuesday distributed to 230 local farmers at Masiaka Koya chiefdom, Port Loko district as a boost to complement government's effort to achieve food security.
The seedlings were not distributed for free. Beneficiaries are expected to pay back at the end of the farming year.
Member of Parliament (MP) representing Constituency 57, Hon. Abubakarr Koroma who, together with the principal assistant to the Paramount Chief and the chiefdom speaker made the donation, told Concord Times that they aim to strengthen the agricultural sector in the constituency and avoid hunger.
"The rice belongs to farmers in the community, that is why I decided to distribute it," he said.
He said a similar project existed before he was elected MP but the seed rice was not distributed to farmers in the entire constituency. "I had wanted to distribute it since last month, but I was waiting for the local council elections to hold," he said.
Chief Pa Naigbana Bomboli Fallah II said the distribution of these seedlings implies that by 2009, their community will be self sufficient.
Pa Bomboli said though the community lacks development, he hopes his community will start moving foreword courtesy of the distributed rice seedlings.
He commended Hon. Koroma for the donation and encouraged non-beneficiaries to be patient and wait for future projects.

One of the beneficiaries, Amidu Conteh said he was not able to farm last year because there was no seed to plant. "I am very impressed with our MP and our chief for helping us with this rice," he said.
