Men and women have the right to access safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of family planning, says Social Development Deputy Minister Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs.

The minister also said women had the right to access healthcare services that would enable them to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth.

Speaking at the World Population Day event held in Pretoria on Friday, Minister Swanson-Jacobs said information led to ensure informed choices.

World Population Day, a United Nations (UN) initiative, is an annual event celebrated throughout the world to raise awareness on the importance of population and socio-economic development.

This year's event, held under the theme: "Family Planning - It's a right lets make it real", is aimed at enabling couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly about the number of children the want.

"Family planning is the conscious effort of couples to regulate the number and spacing of births through artificial and natural methods of contraception," Ms Swanson-Jacobs said, adding that it also contributed to reducing HIV and AIDS infections and maternal mortality.

The minister urged parents to plan ahead and devote more of their resources to the education and health of each child which, she said, will benefit the whole family, community and the nation.

UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid said there was a need for all to advance women's empowerment and to ensure universal access to reproductive health in 2015.

"Family planning is essential to women's empowerment and gender equality, when a woman can plan her family, she can plan the rest of her life," he said.

He said family planning is also an effective means in the fight against poverty.
