Nigeria: NNPC Assures On Education

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said it would sustain all its programmes and policies geared towards enhancing the standard of education.
Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr Levi Ajuonuma, disclosed this at the South-east zonal finals of the 2008 NNPC National Quiz Competition held in Umuahia, Abia State.
Ajuonuma, whose address was read by Mr. Sunny Odiete, head public affairs, NNPC zonal office, Eastern Zone Port Harcourt, said education has remained an important fulcrum on which our community relations initiatives are anchored."
He listed NNPC's educational activities to include provision of text books, exercise books, building of classroom blocks, scholarships, hosting of facility visits, sponsoring of enlightenment programmes, reaching out to the needy, employment of young graduates into the system, among others.Ajuonuma specifically explained that NNPC has paid "great attention" to the sponsorship of the national quiz competition because of several reasons including enhancing science education in the country, coaching students towards their promotional and qualifying examinations and building friendships among them.
Abia State Commissioner for Education, Dr Max Adindu, who declared open the competition, commended NNPC for targeting "the critical group" namely the adolescents in its promotion of science education, adding that any nation that ignores science does so at its own peril".

In the keenly contested competition Imo State represented by Federal Government Girls College, Owerri emerged winner with 80 points while Abia State came second with 75 points, while Enugu State came third with 57.5 points.
