Kampala — The construction sector is experiencing a boom, housing state minister, Michael Werikhe, has said.
"In recent years, the sector's contribution to Gross Domestic Product has been growing at an annual rate of 13%. The sector has registered remarkable growth despite the increasing costs due to the global fuel crisis," Werikhe told reporters at the Media Centre in Kampala.
He said the ministry was drafting an urban planning policy to guide what he called "the sporadic urbanisation in Uganda."
Werikhe predicted that in a few years, Kampala city would have expanded to Entebbe, Mukono and Wakiso.
The commissioner for urban development, Samuel Mabala, said the number of houses in the country had increased to 5.4 million in 2008 from four million in 2002.
Mabala attributed the boom to the high population growth and economic development.
"There is high demand for accommodation evidenced by the ever increasing rent charges," Malaba said.
