Nigeria: EFCC Takes Ex-MP, LG Chairman to Court Over Fraud

The Economic and Finan- cial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has charged a former member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly and a former local government chair-man of Lere local government area in Kaduna to a Federal High Court in Kaduna over an alleged N6.4 million fraud.

The suspects, Lawal Rabiu and Mato Dogara respectively, were arrested by the EFCC for allegedly withdrawing N6, 480, 000 from a First Bank account belonging to the Lere local go-vernment for personal use.

The EFCC's spokesman, Femi Babafemi, told Daily Trust that the former local government chairman, Dogara and Rabiu allegedly conspired to withdraw the said amount between the 25th and the 31st of March 2003, on the pretext that they will use the money for some local government projects which were non-existent.

The EFCC also revealed that two public servants, Ibrahim Lawal Nuhu and Yusuf Zom Sarki, wor-king under Lere Local Government, were charged with alleged N3.8m fraud in another suit.

They were arrested by the EFCC for allegedly withdrawing the said amount owned by the Lere Local Government from the defunct New Nigerian Bank in May 2005, for the purchase of a brand new 406 salon car bought from Kaura Motors Nig. Ltd.

According to the EFCC's spo-kesman, the suspects were granted bail by the judge, Justice James Abiriyi, in the sum of N3 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has charged a former lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Yusuf Dankofa, for alle-gedly attempting to defraud the former Governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero.

According to the EFCC, Dan-kofa approached Aliero in October 2006, asking for a bribe to with-draw a petition he had allegedly written against him to the EFCC.

He was also granted bail by Justice Abiriyi in the sum of N3 million with two sureties in like sum.
