About 90 percent of maternal mortality and morbidity in the North takes place in the North-East sub-region, Borno State, in particular, records the highest of such rate in the sub-region though the incidents can be prevented by checking the blood pressure during the ante-natal care.

A statement made by an advocacy group working under the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) in the state, when they paid a courtesy call to the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Adamu Yuguda Dibal recently said it was unimaginable for women to die while trying to support the continuation of humanity, particularly when such deaths can be prevented.

"Government has important role to play in supporting new projects and programmes to reduce maternal death and maternal morbidity problems, such as VVF," said Mallam Adam Kolo, who spoke on behalf of the group, adding that dRPC was very much aware of the priority the administration in the state had given health matters.

In his remark, the Deputy Governor highlighted the problems of maternal mortality in the state, such as, the lack of medical personnel, coupled with high population growth in the state, as factors responsible for the problems. However, Dibal pledged the state government's readiness to partner with dRPC, urging the organisation to expand its scope of activities to include programmes aimed at increasing the number of health personnel in the state.
