The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has cautioned the Federal Government on the on-going nationwide strike by members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), saying that it should act to put an immediate end to the about two-weeks old action as it was beginning to have adverse effect on out-of-school children.
Rising from a zonal/state Youth leaders forum which took place in Kano, members of the party called on government to enter into concrete dialogue with the striking teachers to end the "unnecessary strike."
According to a statement made available to Vanguard in Abuja yesterday signed by the party's National Youth Leader, Mr. Ebisinne Kofee Amasuomo, the strike has led to an increase in the rate of children trading along the streets throughout the country which it noted, exposed them to all sorts of dangers.
It observed that "the strike has kept a lot of students out of school and has tremendously increased the rate of street trading along various Nigerian roads thereby exposing the children to all kinds of dangers and criminal activities capable of leading to security breakdown and at the same time distorting and destroying the country's academic calendar which has not been favourable to our educational system over the years."
The party was therefore of the view that government needed to proffer solution to the strike in order to save the nation's education system from total collapse.
It said the forum also urged government to create an enabling environment for investments and other development projects in the country to improve the chances of employment for the teeming Nigerian youths.
"By so doing, the rate of unemployment will be drastically reduced as the youths constitute over 65% of the entire country's population.
This will also reduce the rate at which our youths are being used as militants and ballot snatchers by our leaders during elections as more youths will be genuinely engaged with more responsible, reputable and dignified assignments," the statement declared.
