Kampala — THE Japanese government has affirmed its commitment to construct a new bridge to replace the 54-year-old one at the Owen Falls (Nalubaale) Dam in Jinja.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kutesa, discussed the matter with Japanese ambassador Keichi Kato at the ministry's offices in Kampala on Wednesday.

The meeting was a follow- up on what was discussed during the fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development which was held in Yokohama, Japan recently.

Kato told Kutesa that constructing a new bridge on River Nile was one of the projects his government pledged to support during the conference.

At least $50m is needed to build the new bridge, according to the Ministry of Works.

Kato added that his government would help in the construction of the Ayago hydropower dam, boost agricultural production and increase the volume of trade between the two countries.

Kutesa thanked Japan for the hospitality extended to Uganda's delegation.

In a related development, the minister of state for foreign affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, has hosted the outgoing Danish ambassador, Stig Barlying, to a luncheon.
