Nigeria: Federal Government Summons Stakeholders Over High Cost of Diesel

Following the three days strike embarked upon by members of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) over the hike in diesel prices across the country, the Federal Government has called for a meeting of all stakeholders in the oil sector which is slated to hold this morning.

In a communique issued after a meeting held at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) office in Lagos last weekend and jointly signed by the Minister of state for Energy in Charge of petroleum Odein Ajumogobia (SAN), Presidents of NUPENG, Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch National Chairman Timothy Ogbu and the Secretary Dayyabu Garga, it reads in part that the Honourable Minister recognizes the situation at hand and promised to summon an emergency meeting on Tuesday July 15th 2008 of all stakeholders including NUPENG, NARTO, the Honourable Ministers of Finance of ,Transportation and Labour.

The Inspector General of Police and the Chief Executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Petroleum Pipelines Marketing Company (PPMC), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA),Petroleum Equalization Fund (PEF) and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) with the objectives of addressing the issues raised.

Parts of the issues raised and discussed are the Prohibitive cost of Automotive Gas Oil, popularly refereed to as diesel which according to the union is forcing its employers out of business, with consequent job losses on the part of its members, poor condition of access road which has led to several accidents as well as the security and welfare of its members.

It was further gathered however, that it is in view of this meeting holding today that the Union agreed to call of the strike for a two week period with the hope that their grievances would have being addressed withing that period.
