Kigali — The Rwanda Medical Journal recently awarded prizes to two authors for the best researched articles published in the 2007 journal at Kigali Serena Hotel.
The duo includes Goretti Ingabire, a researcher at the Institute of Science and Technological Research (IRST), and Dr. Eugene Muberanziza, a former staff of Kigali Central University Hospital.
Ingabire's work, which was on the contribution of traditional medicines in the health sector, won her $2,000 (approx Frw1.3 million), while Muberanziza wrote about child epidemiological diseases which fetched him $1,500 (approx Frw0.81 million).
The two cash prizes under the Aimee U. Niyikiza Memorial Award were jointly put up by President Paul Kagame and Dr. Clet Niyikiza, a Rwandan medical expert based in the US.
Niyikiza, together with Dr Claude Sekabaraga, the president of Rwanda Medical Journal, presented the awards and accompanying certificates of recognition to the winners.
President Paul Kagame who graced the occasion told the medical experts present that the trend for medical research opens opportunities for each country to provide skills advancement in this domain. He assured them of further government support.
