The Federal Government has said it will build intermediate pillars in Arewa Local Government, Kebbi State along Nigeria-Niger Republic border.
The Director General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Sadiq Marafa Diggi, yesterday in Abuja, said security reports necessitated FG's action.
Speaking at the meeting of the Joint Standing Committee of Experts on the Re-Demarcation of the Nigeria-Niger International Boundary, he said: "I would like to inform my colleague that the NBC and the office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation of Nigeria are prepared to continue with the construction of Main and Intermediate Pillar Exercises. I wish my colleague is similarly disposed so that the Technical Sub-Committee shall resume the construction of the intermediate pillars in the segment already approved."
The committee is part of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation (NNJC) dealing with issues relating to proper definition and management of the International Boundary between the two countries.
"In addition to the segments earlier proposed for intermediate pillars, I would like this meeting to also consider the segment of the international boundary that included Arewa Local Govern-ment Area of Kebbi State for intermediate pillars because of a security report that make this request imperative," Diggi said.
Col. Mohammane Korau (rtd) led the Nigerien delegation, which also included represen-tatives of the internal affairs ministry, foreign ministry, immigration, National Planning Commission (NPC) and security agencies from the two countries.
The NNJC Secretary General, Ambassador Kabiru Garba, said the meeting will examine the technical sub-committee reports on construction of intermediate pillars, determination of bi-point between the two countries, map study of Komadugu/Yobe river course and the handover of Tombo Mota, among others.
He said that there would be an exchange of information on the consequences of the boundary re-demarcation exercise and the progress of the cross-border cooperation initiative in Kano-Katsina-Maradi (K2M) zone.
