Angola: Music Lost One of Its Greatest Icons - Culture Minister

15 July 2008

Luanda — Angolan minister of Culture, Boaventura Cardoso, Monday in Luanda said that the Angolan music lost one of its greatest icons following the death of musician Teta Lando.

Speaking on the Radio Nacional de Angola (RNA) broadcasting station, the official stressed the great work that Teta Lando carried out whilst chairing the National Union of Singers and Composers (UNAC).

"I have just learnt of the death of Alberto Teta Lando and therefore I would say that the Angolan music did not only lose a voice, but an icon", he stated.

Alberto Teta Lando, according to Boaventura Cardoso, was a great musician, a great interpreter of the aspirations, of the feelings of Angolans in terms of music. "Therefore, the whole artistic class, every person of the cultural sector, we are mourning the death of this renowned figure of the Angolan music," said the Culture minister.

Boaventura Cardoso stressed the "work of merit" done by the musician whilst chairperson of UNAC. "It was a visible work, at all laudable levels. It looked like this time UNAC was heading towards progress, mainly in fulfilling the aspirations of all members," he emphasized.

Born in Mbanza Congo, capital of northern Zaire province, Alberto Teta Lando, held the post of chairperson of UNAC since 2006, and passed away on Monday (July 14), in Paris, France, of cancer.

Singer and song-writer, Teta Lando is the author of the famous music collection dubbed "Memórias" that includes various hits released between 1968 and 1990.
