Ethiopian soldiers stationed at a camp in central Somalia were targeted with mortars Tuesday, as Somali insurgents continue their guerrilla war against Ethiopian armed forces.

Residents in the town of Beletwein told Garowe Online that at least six mortars were launched at the Ethiopian army base, which is located in the outskirts of Beletwein.

It was not immediately clear what damage the mortars caused, but Ethiopian forces at the Janta Kundisho military camp launched a counterattack by firing artillery shells into the surrounding hills.

Today's mortar attack coincides with the pullout of Islamic Courts fighters from the interior of Beletwein, the capital of Hiran region, sources said.

Traditional elders were reported to have taken a leading role in the withdrawal of Islamist guerrillas from Beletwein, with locals saying the elders fear armed clashes between Ethiopian troops and the insurgents inside the town.
