Kampala — SHE is only 19 years but she sings like a bird and on Monday night, Ugandan contestant Nicolette Kiige garnered the most votes to reach the top three of the East and Southern African Idols reality show.

She is now much closer to earning herself $80,000 (about sh130 million) and a major recording contract.

When the announcement was made, she cried, mainly because for the last two weeks she had expected to leave, but also because she had become close to Adiona Maboreke, the 20-year-old Zimbabwean, who left on that night.

"Honestly, I think Africa has a mind of its own. I had prepared myself emotionally to be the person going home this week, but when Lebo said I was safe, I didn't expect that at all! I'm really grateful to have another opportunity to get out there and sing! So thank you to all the fans who voted for me," Kiige wrote on a blog on the M-net website.

Kiige will now face off with Zambia's Trinah Chisanga, 19, and Zimbabwe's Eric Moyo, 26, on the penultimate show on Sunday evening.

The final two contestants for the final encounter on July 27, will be announced at 7:30pm on M-Net on Monday, July 21.
