Addis Abeba — The first technical meeting focusing on Family Planning, Reproductive Health and Integration with HIV/AIDS programs officially kicked off on Monday in Addis Ababa.
The international meeting being held at the UNCC is organized by Family Health International-Ethiopia (FHI).
The meeting will keep on till Thursday, July 17, 2008, organizers told The Daly Monitor.
.On the opening speech of Dr. Nigist Tesfaye, the Head of Family Health Department, MOH, said that there is still a lot to be done in order to achieve the MDG especially reduction of mothers mortality.
"Regarding Family planning we need to create demand, address unmet needs, help and counsel women to make informed choices to prevent unintended pregnancies and avoid HIV," she noted.
She added that the family planning services need to be provided to all who are in need of it.
Francesca Stuer, Country Director of FHI-Ethiopia, on her part said the purpose of the meeting was to share programmatic and research experience, lessons learned and resources on family planning and integration with HIV programs.
On the first day of the technical meeting, research papers conducted on a range of topics surrounding the matter were presented for the participants.
The topics, among others, include, Family planning research to practice, past, present and future; Trends in family planning use and unmet need in Sub Saharan Africa; Contraception 101; The latest in family planning methods; Access and quality in family planning services.
The participants from 13 countries-Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, USA, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, DRC and Thailand-are attending the meeting.
