Nigeria: States Get £12 Million for Girl Education

Katsina — Four states, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Niger are to benefit from a British government's grant of £12 million for second phase their Girl-child Education Project (GEP), being executed by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

A memorandum of understanding between the four states and the Department for International Development (DFID), United Kingdom was signed in Katsina, with Governor Ibrahim Shema signing on behalf of the other states; while UK's Minister for International Development, , Mrs. Gillian Merron, signed on behalf of the DFID and UNICEF's Country Representative, Dr. Robert Limlim, for the agency.

On behalf of the four governors, Shema thanked DFID and UNICEF for their efforts in boosting girl education in the state and country in general. He stressed that girl child education was very critical to the development of any nation.

Mrs. Merron said the aim of the memorandum was to get more girls to attend school and expressed the hope for continued positive relationship between the benefiting states implementing the girl child education and the DFID to attain desired objectives.

In another development, the Chancellor, Katsina Islamic University, and Kano-based businessma Alhaji Aminu Dantata has laid the foundation for construction of 40 lecture halls, 20 offices, and three laboratories at the university.

The construction works are part of the N1 billion worth of projects he pledged the university during his investiture as chancellor in March

In a brief ceremony during the meeting of the university's board of trustees, the Wazirin Katsina, Dr Sani Abubakar Lugga who is also Secretary General of the institution, reaffirmed Dantata's commitment to his promise of uplifting the university.

Chairman of the university's Board of Trustees, Emir of Kazaura, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, thanked the chancellor for his unwavering commitment to the university.
