Nigeria: Unesco-Nigeria Project Reviews 57 Curricula

15 July 2008

Lagos — A total of 57 programmes in technical colleges and polytechnics have been reviewed under the first phase of the UNESCO-Nigeria project for the revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education (TVE), National Coordinator of the Project, Dr Nuru A. Yakubu has said.

Yakubu who is also the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), one of the unique features of the revised the curricula, which have been made available to stakeholders in hard and soft copies, was the incorporation of ICT and Enterpreneurship Education.

He added that an estimated 8, 650 staff in the Polytechnic sub sector were trained as part of the project's continuous staff development and capacity building activities.

This number, he said, did not include some 488 teaching staff, who have obtained teaching qualifications, through a training arrangement between one of the six staff Development Centres and the National Teachers Institute (NTI).

About 200 titles of relevant textbooks and publications were procured and delivered to each of the six Staff Development Centres (SDCs) of the project, located in the six geo-political zones.

Describing the phase one of the project as very successful, Yakubu said the Phase II, which had been approved by the Federal Government would lay emphasis on supporting the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Education in enhancing the TVE system to meet the socio-economic needs of Nigeria in the 21st century.

Specifically, he said the Phase II will support the enhancement of continuing TVE staff development system; improvement of the quality of content and linkages of non-formal with formal TVE to create employment opportunities for the unskilled and illiterate youth.

Other activities in the Phase II are the review and development of curricula for the polytechnics and the newly established Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) and Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs), the setting up of additional six SDCs, as well as train core teams of trainers for the SDCs.

A week-long train-the- trainers workshop for 70 polytechnic lecturers is scheduled to hold at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos and Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi by the end of the month, Yakubu further said.
