Ekurhuleni — Newly appointed Ekurhuleni Mayor, Councillor Lentheng Mekgwe, says she will continue with gains made in the municipality to deliver effective services, so that the vision of a better life for all is achieved.
Delivering her inaugural address, Ms Mekgwe, who was formerly the council's Speaker, said: "We will continue to consolidate our efforts towards ensuring that service delivery is aimed at improving the lives of the people of Ekurhuleni for the better."
The mayor said she was greatly honoured and humbled by the confidence and trust that has been bestowed on her.
"Our people have mandated us to continue with the journey of building a better life for all which began in 1994," she said, adding that the council would continue implementing its five-year vision, as outlined by her predecessor.
The new mayor succeeds Duma Nkosi whose resignation became effective on Tuesday.
"The responsibility placed on my shoulders is immense and wide, I am certain that with the humility, integrity, accountability, discipline and the depth of respect for humanity that Nelson Mandela has continued to teach us, we will collectively continue to dedicate ourselves to serve you the people of Ekurhuleni," Ms Mekgwe said.
She also emphasised the need to unite the people of Ekurhuleni into an integrated cohesive force.
"We will have to through the programs we will initiate and ensure that we create conducive conditions to unite our communities behind the council as we work towards development and growth."
With regard to reshuffling of council employees, Ms Mekgwe said she would make an announcement soon.
"At this stage, I cannot say as to who will be part of the team," she said, adding that she will be looking for people who were willing to work.
Also appointed was the new Council Speaker Patricia Khumalo who has been a member of the council for years.
