Governor Gabriel Suswam Benue State has expressed delight with the judgment of the Election Petitions Appeal Tribunal sitting in Jos which yesterday upheld the election of the Senate President, Senator David Mark.
A Government House statement signed by Cletus Akwaya, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs to the governor said the judicial pronouncement upholding Senator Mark's election was a clear indication that the judiciary is truly the beacon of hope for the growth, strength and survival of Nigeria's democracy.
The statement which was made available to Daily Trust by mail yesterday said Senator Mark's victory was not only for Benue South Senatorial District but also for Benue State and indeed all democrats across the country as it affords the Senate and the National Assembly stability and continuity in its leadership.
Governor Suswam saluted the panel members at the Appeal Tribunal for standing firm on the side of justice as manifested in the landmark judgment. He said history and posterity would be kind to the jurists for threading the path of truth and justice.
He congratulate Senator Mark over the victory and enjoined him to be spurred by it to continue to provide effective leadership to the National Assembly and indeed the Federal Government and deliver the dividends of democracy to the ordinary people.
The governor urged the ANPP candidate and sole challenger of Mark at the Tribunal, Alhaji Usman Abubakar Maishanu(aka Young Alhaji) to put the bitter struggle for the Senatorial seat behind him and team up with Senate President in the overall interest of Benue South Senatorial District and the state at large.
"The state government wishes to warn mischief makers who might attempt to capitalize on this latest development to exhibit any form of untoward behaviour to avoid any act capable of bringing them in confrontation with the law as security agencies have been fully briefed to take care of any form of misbehaviour in accordance with the laws of the land", he said.
He saluted the courage, patience, support, prayers and solidarity of friends and numerous supporters who stayed with the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and Senator Mark through his legal battles from the Election Petitions Tribunal in Makurdi through to the Election Petition Appeals Tribunal in Jos.
