PEOPLE who want to acquire land titles in the north will no longer have to travel to Kampala. The lands ministry is to construct 13 district land offices in the region to decentralise operations.
The offices will handle land transactions like giving out title deeds and general information. Lango paramount chief Yosam Odur launched the $4m (sh6.5b) project at Lira Hotel on Monday.
It is funded by the World Bank through the Private Sector Foundation.
Lands minister Omara Atubo said the project would improve the delivery of services and urged local governments to employ qualified land officers
"We need offices which are equipped with modern land administration technology and officers who can respond promptly to most needs in the districts without travelling to Kampala," he said.
One of the best ways of preventing land disputes is the acquisition of certificates of ownership, Atubo added.
Odur urged the ministry to resolve the border conflict between Abim and Lira districts.
"Our residents in the contentious border area came to my office, asking for guns to defend themselves.
"I urge the Government to help us resolve this conflict that seems to be unending," said Odur.
He added that the chiefdom was encouraging residents to plant trees to mark their land boundaries to reduce land disputes in Lango.
