Nigeria: Adamawa Begins Enrolment of Students in Science Schools

Yola — Adamawa State Government has announced the take-off and enrollment of students in eight senior science secondary schools in September, as part of efforts to meet state's need for science personnel.

The schools situated at strategic locations across the state would be free in order to encourage full participation with the view to tackling present exigencies of educational strife in the state.

State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Alh. Abdurahman Abba made this declaration in his maiden speech while receiving members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), who were on a tour of the state to assess projects being executed by the government from its inception.

The Commissioner who stressed the state's need to expand educational opportunities noted that government was committed to meeting the global challenges on science and technology where projects are located.

According to him, 40 per cent of the state government's monthly allocation is allotted to education.

He also explained the state government's decision for making medical care free for ages below five years and 70 above was aimed at ensuring that many more people receive good medical care.

Commissioner Abba, urged the journalists on the state tour to access round the rural areas of the state where projects are done with a view to avoiding biased reporting.

Responding to the National President, Nigerian Union of Journalist, Mr. Ndageni Agu assured the state government that all the media men on the trip tour would give accurate assessment of what they saw on ground.

"We are watch dogs of the society, the society has given us a very difficult task, by the grace of God we can not disappoint them.

"What we do is that whenever we find stakeholders given big responsibility such as delivering dividends of democracy to the people sleeping, we wake them up", he said.

Also briefing the newsmen deputy Governor, Barrister Bala James Ngillari, said despite the disputes faced by the government through court litigations at various capacities that lead to the annulment of Governor Nyako's administration, the visitors would never be disappointed if taken round the state for their mission.

The Team of the Nigerian Journalists were expected to start their inspection at the Northern senatorial zone on Sunday.
