Zimbabwe: Idols Top Four Put to Test

Harare — As the race for MNet's reality show Idols hots up, the seventh Idols spectacular saw the top four contestants on Sunday being tested by the show's producers and vocal coach on the "Producer's Choice" show.

The team behind the scenes chose songs which they thought would most accurately showcase the talented quartet's voices -- and test them to see which of them could step up and stand out.

Two Zimbabweans, Eric Moyo and Adiona Maboreke, are part of the four who are vying for the top prize of US$80 000 and a recording contract.

The final has been set for July 27.

The contestants answered questions posed by viewers on the website this week in their video insets. Asked about whether he would keep his Afro, Zimbabwean contestant Eric replied that everyone in his family, apart from his Dad, wears an Afro and promised to keep it.

He kicked off the seventh Spectacular with Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long". TK and Angela were both impressed with his performance, with Angela expressing her surprise at his dancing ability. Scar said he had a lot of fans and it was great that he never disappointed them.

Nicollette was asked if she thought there should be a "Kids' Idols", based on her background in teaching music to young children. She said it would be a good idea as a moulding experience for them, but only if the judges didn't grill them.

Her first song of the evening was "Do You Know Where You're Going To?" by Diana Ross. TK felt she did a good job with a challenging song and Angela welcomed her back to the stage.

"That performance is the reason you're here." she said.

Another Zimbabwean contestant, Adiona, was asked whether she would ever join her parents, who live overseas, or if her heart belonged to Africa.

"Africa is my home, it's where my heart is," she said.

She wants to be with her folks, but only to visit. She tackled "The Greatest Reward" by Celine Dion as her first performance of the night.

TK and Scar were impressed with her vocals, while Angela said it was a pleasure to watch her growth every week.

Trinah's question was about whether she would continue to sing in the group she used to be a part of before she started her Idols journey, once the show was over.

"I'll tell you after the competition!" she said. "I'll always be a part of the group, whether I carry on singing with them or not."

Her first song was Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful".

TK said her performance was amazing and that she would sell albums whether she was part of a group or singing solo. Angela was happy that she had managed to bring the emotion back to her singing, while Scar said everyone watching was there to see a show -- and that is exactly what she had delivered.

Nicollette kicked off the second half of the show, answering a viewer question about choosing between making an album or going to school.

"Both are very important to me," she said. "It's hard to choose but I'd like to finish school in one go then concentrate on the album. I'm not sure, it's tough one!"

Her second rendition was of the Nat King Cole classic "Unforgettable".
