Abuja — Officials of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services are set to enforce the law on motor vehicle insurance certificate as from July 21, 2008.

The directorate's Director, Major Adamu S. Argungu (Rtd) said that a sensitization campaign has been going on in the past three months through various mass media as well as through an enforcement team comprising of the police, FCT DRTS under the auspices of the presidential committee on One Stop Claim Shop for Motor Vehicle Insurance (OSCAR).

He advised motorists in the FCT to obtain the valid insurance certificate from any NAICOM registered insurance company before July 21, 2008 and avoid the purchase of fake vehicle insurance certificate as defaulters stand to face a penalty.

Argungu also advised motorists to visit OSCAR/ SERVICOM office situated at Heritage House Zone 3, Abuja for further enquires on the list of approved insurance companies for the scheme.

The director explained that the whole essence of the insurance scheme is to ensure that accident victims are paid claims as at when due, while the federal government wants to ensure that accident victims taken to the hospitals are attended to.

"With this new scheme, accident victims taken to the hospitals would be attended to and thereafter the said hospital goes to OSCAR/SERVICOM office, which will ensure that the hospital is paid if the vehicle involved is genuinely insured.

Our reporter learnt that the third party insurance cost N5000 for private vehicles and N7, 500 for commercial vehicles.

The director said that the commercial insurance cover is more expensive because the passengers are equally insured within the duration of a journey.
