The Federal Government and the Japanese government in Abuja signed an agreement aimed at promoting the teaching of mathematics in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja by Mr Timothy Akpoli, the Press Officer in the Federal Ministry of Education.

It said the Minister of State for Education, Dr Jerry Agada, signed for Nigeria while Mr Katsuiho Kamiya, an official of the Japanese Embassy in Nigeria, signed for Japan.

The statement quoted Agada as commending the Japanese Government for offering to assist Nigeria in manpower development in mathematics.

"For us to compete favourably with other nations in this age of ICT, the teaching and learning of science and mathematics are paramount at the basic level in our education system.

"We will, therefore, welcome any assistance that will help in this direction", it quoted him as saying.

Also speaking, Kamiya said the people of Japan were contributing to Nigeria's educational development because of their believe in the building of human capacity.

He said Japan would continue to contribute its quota towards ensuring that countries overcome such challenges as illiteracy, poverty and diseases.
