TO make Port Harcourt cleaner the Rivers state government is to begin house to house collection of refuse. The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Kingsley Chinda flagged off the new project with an appeal to residents to ensure the success of the exercise.

He said the strategy was part of the government's integrated waste management system designed to address the sanitation problems in the state. According to him, waste collectors appointed by the government under its private public partnership programme would move from house to house collecting the refuse.

He pleaded with residents and companies to bring out their waste bins from 8am in the morning.

The commissioner continued that the exercise would start from Trans Amadin area, GRA, Bundu waterside

"We want to tell you that we want to commence a house-to-house collection of wastes, which would include gathering outside your fence wall, which would also include litter control,"

"Government wants to withdraw completely from funding the collection and disposal of wastes; henceforth, companies and individuals will be paying for the wastes they generate as part of their social responsibility."
