17 July 2008

Abia — FORMER Abia State Governor Orji Kalu has been noted man of the Year by the Anambra Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).In a letter signed by Council Chairman Tochulwu Udoji, Dr. Kalu was commended for his contributions to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria and foresight which created job opportunities for Nigerians.

"You stood up for the truth when others either shied away or jumped on the Third Term Band Wagon. You floated a political party to emancipate the people, and it's just six months the Peoples Progressive Party (PPA) won two gubernatorial seats," Udoji wrote.

Kalu who ventured into the newspaper industry in 1989 with the tabloid "Every Woman" received encomiums for going ahead to broaden the business.

"We appreciate your success in the print journalism with the establishment of two powerful, colourful and widely circulated newspapers which have in their employ hundreds of journalists, who feed their families and pay to the NUJ their professional fees".
