Justice Sector Development Programme (JSDP) Tuesday organized a one day interactive workshop for media practitioners on media ethics, court reporting, freedom of information and the legal responsibility of journalists in the legal justice system.
The aim of the workshop is to equip reporters on human rights issues and justice system in the country and to strengthen good relationship between the media and JSDP.
Justice Sector Coordinator, Sarah Lewis, said most of the delays and inefficiency in the country's justice system is as a result of limited level of cooperation and coordination among institutions that are responsible for proper justice system.
She said her organization aims to develop a coherent approach to policy makers in order to build a strategy adding that the media has an important role to play in ensuring a proper justice system in the country.
Chairperson of the Independent Media Commission, Mrs. Bernadette Cole said the establishment of community radio stations across the country has contributed immensely to the dissemination of information.
"The media has a peculiar role to play. They inform people about what is going on in the courts, issues of police investigations and prisons," she said.
JSDP Consultant Pa Momoh Fofanah advised journalists to accurately report issues that deal with the justice system.

"Journalists have the right to access information but for any right, there must be a corresponding responsibility," he said adding that journalists should be aware that the Public Order Act of 1965 is still in the law books of Sierra Leone.
