Kampala — Over 500 people with eye defects in Wakiso district have received free treatment.
"We have examined over 500 people with eye defects of whom 120 are to undergo the cataract surgery in order to regain their sight," Robert Kakembo, the Wakiso district ophthalmic officer, told The New Vision at Nabweru Health Centre on Wednesday.
The programme was sponsored by the Lions Club of Kampala Central, Mulago Hospital and the Wakiso district doctors.
Kakembo said 30% of the people examined were suffering from cataract, a condition which is preventable and curable. "Statistics show that cataract condition is more common among the elderly because as one grows, the chances of having this problem become high," Kakembo said.
Dr. Emmanuel Ssenoga, the clinical officer of Nabweru, attributed the high cases of cataract to poverty. Each eye could be operated on at a cost sh250,000, Ssenoga added.
He urged people to go to Kasazi Health Centre for free eye treatment next week.
