Nigeria: Accident - APM Terminal Gets Foreign Experts

Lagos — APM Terminal Apapa Limited is flying in some technical experts to assess the immediate and remote causes of accident involving one of its newly acquired gantry cranes.

The company's Managing Director Mr. Michael Land Hansen said the accident occurred as the Boom of the one of the cranes missed its target while discharging cargo from a vessel.

However, no casualty was recorded but the Managing Director of the terminal said the incident has given them a temporary set back while he said the management is trying to put it behind and remain more focus in maintaining its leadership position in ports operations.

According to him, the vessel on which the crane was discharged suffered a minor damage which the company is making effort to rectify the problem.

He said they are trying to investigate the rest of the cranes before they are put into use.

The APM Terminal boss said the incident would not hinder their resolve to continue to develop the ports and offer employment to qualify Nigerians.

He also said that the company intends to bring in larger cranes if they receive assurance from the Nigerian Ports Authority that the Quayside is strong enough to hold them.

"We are bringing another crane to remove boom so that the affected vessel can depart"

"We are bringing some experts to find out the cause of the accident" he said.

Hansen said AP Terminal management has informed the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) on different steps being taken by the company.
