A non-governmental organisation involved in HIV and Aids activities, Humana People to People, is considering training voluntary caregivers in HIV testing.

The organisation learnt the concept from its Zambian counterparts during a meeting to discuss effective responses to HIV held in Changalane, Mozambique early this month.

Commenting on the concept that sparked a lot of interest among representatives of the nine participating countries, the organisation's human resources and public relations officer Mr Bob Zere said the approach was in line with his organisation's objective of intensifying HIV and Aids mitigation programmes in country.

The programme is being run under the theme "Total Control of the Epidemic. The idea behind TCE is that only the people can liberate themselves from Aids. In areas where TCE field officers would be operating, a sizeable number of them will be responsible for equipping the community with essential knowledge on behaviour change and the importance of knowing one's status," said Mr Zere.

He said the concept of training TCE officers in HIV testing works hand in hand with the door to door campaigns because officers will be provided with a full package comprising both messages on behaviour change and testing service - the foundation to behaviour change.

Mr Zere said for the organisation to start training the officers on HIV testing, it needed approval from the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare.
