FOLLOWING a meeting with Federal Government officials in Abuja yesterday, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State announced that the plan to close the Third Mainland bridge to allow for repairs has been shelved.

Instead, diversions would be created on days that repair work would be done on the bridge and commuters adequately informed of the diversion.

Governor Fashola who spoke briefly with State House correspondents after the National Economic Council meeting said it would be extremely difficult for Lagosians if the bridge was to be closed and after meeting with officials of the Ministry of Transportation, they saw reasons with the position of the state government

He said: "Since closure has been dropped, we will announce when the date for the diversion will commence and we are going to advise commuters on the actual date it will begin, alternative routes to take and how to go about it."

The governor noted that the decision to reverse the earlier plan by the Federal Government was borne out of the need to minimise the hardships being experienced by commuters on Lagos roads.
