Ilorin — Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Hassan Muhammad Lawal yesterday said his ministry's move to review existing labour laws under the aegis of the International Labour Organization was designed to strengthen the capacity of the ministry and its agencies in the discharge of their statutory obligations as well as promote social dialogue.

Dr Lawal said at a stakeholders' workshop on labour administration and employment generation strategies in Ilorin that it would be very important if all stakeholders unite in the commitment to ensure the early passage of the institutional bills by the National Assembly.

He said the main aim of the workshop was to develop concrete measures and policy guidelines for the repositioning of the Ministry of Labour and its agencies.

"This will enable us to effectively handle the socio-economic problems of the country and provide a conducive industrial relations atmosphere for sustainable national development", he said.

He urged all stakeholders to be involved and contribute positively to the realization of the present government's seven-point agenda and vision 20-2020.

"I expect this gathering to discuss wide -ranging issues, including but not limited to effective labour administration, factory inspection, productivity improvement techniques, capacity building for workers, social security and employment generation strategies", he said.

He said the assemblage of critical labour stakeholders was an indication of the ministry's commitment to providing an integrated and holistic approach to the socio-economic challenges of the nation.

In his remarks, the governor of Kwara State, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki said the goal of all ties of government was to improve on the lives of the people.

He said the fundamental issue one needs to address was the stability of the labour relations in the country, adding that there should be an enabling environment and commitment that would allow each of them to grow well.
