The humane stray dogs and rabies control programme has disclosed plans to arrest and take care of over 30,000 dogs across the country.
Director Dr Abdul Jalloh told Concord Times that dogs in Sierra Leone continue to face lots of problems but assured that very soon their problems would be over.
"We have vaccinated over 9,000 dogs and more will be vaccinated. We will be vaccinating dogs for rabies, worms, diarrhea and scabies infections," he said.
Dr Jalloh noted that Rotary Club Sierra Leone has donated 5,000 dozens of rabies vaccines for dogs to be treated for worms and mange.
He noted that people have died of rabies infection invariably contracted from sick dogs.
"My trained veterinary technicians will treat these dogs to control their population. Female dogs are spayed whilst male dogs are neutered," he said.
The vet also said it is a common sight to see children playing with puppies outside their homes although their parents may not want them to do so.
He noted that dogs are found roaming the streets of Freetown without proper care adding that the condition of stray dogs in Freetown was very poor, which makes them vulnerable to diseases.
A social worker at the university of Texas hospital Kathryn Taylor, who is in Freetown on a tourist visit, said she will talk to people to raise funds to care for dogs in Freetown.
Taylor said apparently people do not know how to be kind to animals.

"People are kind to animals but cannot compromise their family issues to animals. Dogs are faithful to people and are very protective as they provide good companies," she said.
