The winner of 2008 Murtala Muhammed Post Graduate Scholarship Award instituted by London Metropolitan University has been named.

At a press conference yesterday in the Multimedia Suite, British Council, Ikoyi, Lagos, the awardee, Mr. John Ekainu Achukwu, 25 years old graduate of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, was unveiled. He studied Electrical/Computer Engineering.

According to Seun Adeniyi, Administrator, Nigeria Office London Metropolitan University, the 2008 Award is aimed at the ICT/Telecoms sector.

Present at the event were Jummai Muhammed Oluyude, daughter of the late General Murtala Muhammed, Nigeria's third military Head of State killed in an abortive coup in 1976; Peter Stephenson, Director, UK Trade and Investment, British Deputy High Commission, Lagos; Sam Harvey, Director, British Council, Lagos; Alex Oyebajimi, Virgin Nigeria and Lebari Ukpong, Director, Nigeria Office, London Metropolitan University.

Ukpong said the choice of Murtala Muhammed's name for the post graduate scholarship scheme was because of the values he stood for in the short time he ruled Nigeria which has been appreciated by the various public and private facilities named after him by the government and other organisations.

A small per cent of the best, brightest and most deserving students are awarded different scholarships by the university.

Several Nigerian students have benefitted from those scholarships and the Nigeria Office of London Met is seeking to enter partnerships with various industries to provide corporate scholarships.

The university, situated in the heart of London, offers over 485 courses with students from over 150 countries, numbering over 37,000. There are about 500 Nigerians studying at the university.

Achukwu, after receiving the award, said he looked forward to starting a career in the research area of computer networking and its uses in simplifying the daily activities of the average individual.
