South Africa: Rugby Legends Put Pupils Through Their Paces

More than 200 youngsters from schools across Mitchells Plain were given the opportunity to be coached by former Springbok rugby players at the launch of the regional chapter of the South African Rugby Legends programme.

Players such as Dale Santon, Robbie Fleck, John Allan and Breyton Paulse were among the 20 legends who descended on the sports grounds of Spine Road High School to put pupils from six high schools through their paces yesterday.

Santon, a former Spine Road High School pupil, said it was shocking that there were 17 high schools in Mitchells Plain, but only three were playing rugby.

"I started on this very field and see a need in this area. These youngsters need good role models not gang leaders or drug lords," he said.

"Seeing the smile on their faces today is better than playing in a Test."

Former Springbok loose forward Rob Louw said he was puzzled about why more players from the coloured community were not selected for the national team, and appealed to rugby clubs to select black players. "There is a depth of talent in the coloured and Muslim community, this is where transformation comes in," he said.

Siyabonga Banzana, 16, of Zisukhanyo High in Philippi, said yesterday's experience was great fun and that he had learnt "tons" from the rugby stars. "The best part was playing with them and they taught me passing skills," he said.

Cheslyn Williams, 16, of Aloe High, said he was overwhelmed to see the legends "in real life" and also learnt the importance of playing as a team.

A girl's rugby team from Zisukhanyo High also attended the coaching clinic. Coach MP Zaula said a large number of girls at the school were keen to play and "showed a lot of heart".
